That’s how much candidates, parties and PACs spent on
federal elections in 2016. “Invested”, as in reaching voters
through ads, phone banks, direct mail and canvassing.
Ostensibly, the goal is to persuade people to vote for a
particular candidate or issue.
A white paper by two prominent political scientists who
analyzed data from 49 field experiments within state, local,
and federal campaigns found that the total effect of these efforts was ZERO, meaning that they had no impact on how voters vote. In many states, the lack of understanding of voter behavior was palpable – and the poor results that followed bore that out in vivid detail.
For every postcard stuck in a mailbox, every radio and newspaper ad, every door knocked on by an earnest volunteer and every candidate message left on an answering machine, there was “no measurable change in voting outcomes.”
